How much does an interior decorator earn?
Interior decorators (Raumausstatter) furnish interiors with floor coverings, wall coverings, curtains, sun protection and decoration – from advice and measuring to professional installation. They work in interior-decorating firms, furniture retail, contract fit-outs or independently on site. Gross pay depends on region, employer, experience and specialisation. As a guide, qualified interior decorators in Germany in 2026 often earn about €3,000–€3,600 gross per month; during apprenticeship around €920–€1,220 is typical.

Guide figures as of 2026. The apprenticeship column refers to dual training as Raumausstatter or related trades; qualified means working interior decorators. Actual pay depends on collective agreements, employer, region, experience, order situation and specialisation (e.g. flooring, sun protection, contract fit-outs) and is not a guarantee.

Job and everyday work
An interior decorator works in the workshop and often on site at the customer’s: measuring rooms, selecting materials, laying floors and cutting and installing curtains, blinds and decorative fabrics. Everyday work combines precise craftsmanship, advice on design and care, and coordination with other trades – often under deadline pressure in new builds, renovations and contract projects.
- Measure rooms, check substrates and calculate material needs for floors, walls and soft furnishings.
- Lay floor coverings; cut, sew and install curtains, blinds and decorative elements.
- Apply wall coverings and textile elements properly; check fit and appearance.
- Advise customers on fabrics, colours, care and costs; document measurements and orders.
- Maintain tools, sewing and laying machines; organise sites and the workshop.
- Coordinate with carpenters, painters and other trades and ensure quality standards.
